This is Ian Cowen.  To finish our adventure in Germany, I helped staff at a music festival at the Knüll. Bestowed upon me was the duty of maintaining those great porcelain thrones, the seat of relief and terror, the toilets.  In reality it was more than that, I was cleanup crew and went about thrice a day checking the grounds, cleaning the washrooms, and generally making the place a healthy environment. I worked alongside Kamal, a usual helper around the grounds during the rest of the year. All in all it was a pleasant experience, and left me with plenty of free time to walk around the mountains, an excursion that could not be undertaken in Texas!

Hello, I’m Sophia Daniels and I was able to be a part of the Summer Music Fest at Knüell Camp. I helped in the Jause by doing dishes and other various chores. Every day I would collect dishes from tables or the shelf near the entrance of the restaurant and bring them to kitchen. I would then rinse the food off of the plates to load them into the dishwasher. After the  wash cycle was over I would put the dishes and silverware into their appropriate places. Throughout the week I managed to only break two cups! Besides dishes I would also clean off tables and sweep the floors. I attempted to sweep the entire restaurant at least three times a day to keep up with all the dirt and grass dragged in by the customers. The weather during the week was rainy so lots of mud was tracked in and was very difficult to keep up with. During my breaks I would play cards with a few of the kids from the Music Fest. When it started getting dark musicians would wonder inside and play their instruments and sing. The atmosphere in the Jause was very enjoyable and people that were a part of the Fest were very pleasant. This was a very good experience for me and I’m very glad to have participated in it. I hope I will be able to help the wonderful staff at the Jause again next year! And thank you to Bishop Meyers and his wife Grace for all their love and hospitality during this trip.

This is Mary Woolsey.  During the Summer Musikfest, there was a lot of “behind the scenes” activity going on.  I had the joy and privilege to serve in the “Jause.”  The Jause (which means snack) is a café on the grounds of the Knuell Camp.  Each day of the festival there was a special-featured meal for those who chose to eat in the Jause.  Grace Meyer planned and shopped for the meals and I got to help prepare them.  There was breakfast each morning that was customary in Germany: ”fresh baked rolls and pastries (from the bakery in town owned by Grace’s son-in-law and daughter), cheese and meat, butter and homemade jam!  Some of the lunches feature schnitzel, potato sausage, and Spätzel with beef and sauce.  Oh, and the cakes!!! (also from the local bakery).  So delicious and beautifully prepared.  They sold out every day!!  So, as I learned to say in Germany “Guten Appetit!!”

This is Deacon Mark.  The last week of the Germany trip was filled with the Summer Music Fest at Knuell Camp.  This was an incredible week.  About 300 campers come to stay in tents and in the permanent housing here.  30 or so of them lead music and dance workshops.  I got to lead one of them, English Country Dance.  I don’t mean to be trite, but it really seemed like the hand of Providence guided this adventure.  First, I was connected with Gabi, a German lady who gathered together other musicians for live music for the dancing.  Then I had to explain the workshop on stage to 300 Germans whom I had never met, and then demo it with Sophia.  This was truly one of the scariest things I’ve ever done in my life.  Next, I had to hope enough would show up for the workshop (20 – 30 did for the first days; ended with more than 15).  We practiced for 5 days.  Finally, Saturday evening, 16 of us and the musicians performed in a big tent in front of all the crowd.  Terrifying, but exhilarating!

Hello, this is Sophia Daniels,

and I would like to share a part of my experience in Berlin. I volunteered at a Christian event called:

„I don’t Need Hawaii“ to help spread God’s message to all kinds of people who were involved in many different ways of life.

I was able to help in many ways from putting up tents to supervising a kid’s game. The tents we put up for the event required a lot of hard work from all of the staff. A group consisting of three women and myself put up two of the smaller tents. The tents are made from long metal poles and pieces of plastic which attach them together.

Then, once the poles are assembled, a large tarp goes over them and is secured with big metal nails and buckles to latch onto the poles. The first few attempts to throw the tarps over the metal frames failed, but we kept trying and eventually were successful! To hold these tarps down we took a nail and ran it through some rope attached to the tent. We then took turns holding the nail while one of us hammered it into the ground using a sledge hammer. This was quite a workout for just two of us switching from hammering to stabilizing. I was very impressed with the fellow volunteers considering the sledge hammer was almost half their size!

The whole process of putting these tents up probably took around 7-8 hours, but with such a great group of volunteers, we got it done handily. Although very physically demanding, almost everyone was able to help out with the process. It was a very rewarding experience. I’m very glad to have been given the opportunity to participate and help out with a great event for the Lord!

Hi, I’m Ian.

Berlin is a fantastic city full of culture and history, too much in fact for our team to fully experience it all! That did not stop us however from visiting some of the more iconic spots, such as the Olympia station (though we didn’t go inside we had a brilliant view of the exterior), the Memorial to the Murdered, Brandenburg Gate, as well as a quick stop by the Reichstag; and that was just one day!

Throughout the rest of the week we stopped by other attractions including the Tiergarten, Tempelhofer Feld, various museums and parts of the city where the Wall once stood, and even a boat tour down the Spree to have a look at some of the more notable buildings and such. To wrap it all up we visited Potsdam to tour the Neues Palais as well as the Lustgarten and the other historical sites on the grounds.

On the first day of the Youth Evangelistic Outreach, I (Mary Woolsey) joined a group that was in charge of serving a fresh squeezed cup of orange juice. It was squeezed right on the spot! Each person had been given a card offering the drink on one side and a prayer on the other side. This exchange opened the opportunity to engage the people in conversation and prayer. I was completely out of my comfort zone, but each person I spoke to was friendly and open. The Lord led several interesting people to me. The first two people I met were two young men from Syria. They had been in Germany for seven months. They spoke English quite well and were open to prayer with me and another lady leading our group. Germany has many Syrian refugees living in very difficult conditions. Many are separated from their families. Some are as young as 14 with no parental support. The families of these men were still in Syria living in dangerous conditions. It was a privilege to pray for them. Among others that I met were three young men from New York, two young ladies from Stuttgart, and even a young man from Norway vacationing with his family! He was so blessed by the juice that he left an offering! A significant challenge that I see, not only in Germany, but in all nations is with our youth. They see Anglican worship as boring and mechanical. May the Lord grant us grace to reach our youth, draw them into our community, and share the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ!  Glory to His name!

Hello, I’m Deacon Mark.

We’ve been in Germany almost three weeks and have another week and a half to go.  We’ve seen a lot of fascinating sites and places, and we’ve helped with a youth evangelistic outreach in Berlin.  My part in the outreach included helping to build the large tent, and then doing something especially spiritual – teaching English Country Dance.  You might ask what’s an American doing in Germany teaching English Country Dance, and, well, I wondered that, too.  However, dance, especially one as fun as this, has universal appeal.  It’s easy to learn and draws in those who would not otherwise participate.  The organizers asked me to teach it in two sessions, one the first day of the event, and the second on the last day.  After getting a seed group of people to start the dance lesson, we were able to pull in more people who were reluctant to join, yet had a good time once they started.

After the lessons were over I got to talk to several Germans about various topics.  One was a young lady who was a Christian, but the other was an older lady who was not particularly interested in the church – too much conflict between Christians.  However, I was able to give her the name of a local Anglican church in Berlin so who knows, perhaps God will use this to bring someone into His dance.

Diese Alternative ist übereinstimmend mit Gottes heiligem Wort. Sie konzentriert sich auf die Anbetung des allmächtigen Gottes und nicht auf die Verehrung des Menschen. Sie ist eine Alternative, reich an bibeltreuen Predigten und noch beständig, wie sie sich in der englischen, protestantischen Reformation unserer Vorväter dargestellt hat.

Der Bundesschluss und die Engelbegleitung  2 Mose / Exodus 23

Am heutigen Sonntagmorgen würde bei einem Morgenlob-Gottesdienst noch vor dem späteren Abendmahls-Gottesdienst der Text aus Exodus 24 in der AT Lesung unserer kirchlichen Jahreslese verlesen werden.

(Hinweise hier auf: Apg 17,11 – Beröanische Christen –  die eigentlichen Anglikaner – Vorbild in Schrifterkenntnis und Handhabung).

In diesem Kapitel geht es um einen Bundesschluss. Nachdem das Volk Gottes die 10 Gebote gehört hatte, die 10 Prinzipien, und danach auch die Fallbeispiele in Einzelheiten dargelegt bekommen hatten, antworteten sie einstimmig so: 24,3: Alles, was der Herr gesagt hat, wollen wir tun.

Alles nun, was uns zwischen Kap. 20 und 24 gegeben wurde, ist äußerst wichtig zu verstehen. Denn es geht auch uns als Volk Gottes im Neuen Bund an, ob wir im Alltag gesegnet oder nicht gesegnet werden, ob wir im Bund Gottes durch Christus geschlossen stehen und ewiges Leben haben, oder ob wir ohne Bundesschluss bei Gott vorgefunden werden und ewig verloren gehen. Gilt uns der Bundesschluss, dann wird uns hier auf Erden schon physischer und materieller Segen zusätzlich zum geistlichen Segen verheißen. Stehst du  aber ohne Bundesschluss im Glauben vor Gott, dann bist Du ewig von Gott getrennt, ohne Verheißung des ewigen Lebens und ohne körperlichen und materiellen und irdischen Segen, bist ganz verloren.

Zuerst noch einmal zum Vorbild des Bundesschlusses. Der Bundesschluss mit dem AT Volk Gottes reflektierte schon damals die Bundesverträge zwischen Großkönigen und untergebenen Königen. Anders ausgedrückt: Ein mächtiger König besiegt und unterwirft einen anderen Könige und dessen Volk. Dieser König schloss mit dem Versallenkönig einen Vertrag. Er und das Volk wurden zu einem Bundespartner, indem es die Forderungen durch Bundesvertrag akzeptierte. Der Großkönig sagte: Solange ihr euch an diesen Vertrag haltet, mir loyal gegenüber seid, bin ich euch gnädig, beschütze euch, gebe euch viele Vorrechte und meinen Segen. Wenn aber nicht, steht ihr unter dem Fluch. Dann wurden zwei Dokumente des Vertrages vor allem Volk unterzeichnet und wurden gültig.

Ähnlich ist dies hier mit dem einzigen und erhabenen Gott Jahwe. Er gibt die 10 Gebote als Bundesvertrag. Die 10 Worte sind die Prinzipien der Liebe zu Gott und den Menschen, man nennt sie auch die apodiktischen Gesetze – die unabdingbaren und dogmatischen, die nicht geändert werden können. Dann folgen danach die vielen Fallbeispiele: Wenn dies geschieht, dann folgt dies: Wer ein Stück Vieh stiehlt, der soll dies ersetzen, bezahlen, etc. Die dann folgenden Gesetze mit vielen Beispielen nennt man auch die kasualistischen Gesetze. Alle diese folgen dann in Exodus, Levitikus und an anderen Stellen in den Mosebüchern.

In Kapitel 23 geht es um mancherlei Einzeldinge und Vorschriften: Um das Verhalten vor Gericht, nicht parteiisch, sondern unparteiisch zu sein, weder den Armen noch den Reichen zu begünstigen, auch nicht mit der Mehrheit zu stimmen, wenn es um Unrecht und gegen die Prinzipien der 10 Gebote oder die einzelnen Fallbeispiele gehen sollte.  Hier geht es unter anderem auch um die Behandlung der Flüchtlinge und der Armen und um die im unteren sozialen Niveau Lebenden.

Wir alle können hier lernen, dass wir von unserem Reichtum und Überfluss diesen Menschen immer wieder etwas abgeben sollen. Sie sollen nicht von unserer Gesellschaft mit Hungerlöhnen ausgenutzt werden, wie dies nach dem Krieg oft bei den Heimatvertriebenen geschah, auch wie es in den 60er Jahren mit den Italiener oder vielen türkischen Arbeitern später geschah, und wie es jetzt wieder mit vielen Asylanten und Ostarbeitern geschieht die mit Niedriglohn oder Hungerlohn oft Schwarz angestellt werden.

Die Prinzipen Gottes sind nicht veränderbar, die Fallbeispiele können aber an die gegenwärtige Situation anpasst werden. Dies gilt dann auch für uns, unsere Situation hier und in Deutschland mit den vielen Flüchtlingen. Gerade hier sind wir gefordert, zu helfen und Gutes zu tun, wenn auch nur nach jeweiligem eigenen Vermögen und bei Einzelnen.

Dann aber tritt hier noch ein wesentlicher Aspekt für uns zur Erscheinung. Am Ende des Bundesschlusses in Kap. 24 beginnt fließend ohne Übergang der Hinweis auf das Heiligtum, der Errichtung der Zeltkirche oder des Bundeszeltes, darin der Bundesvertrag lag. Einen Bundesvertrag ohne Bundeszelt und  Gottesdienst gibt es nicht. Der Name Gottes und dieser Vertrag soll fortwährend verehrt und immer befolgt werden.  Die wöchentliche Feier des Gottesdienstes und drei Hochfeiern während des Jahres bilden den Höhepunkt.

Deshalb wird schon in unserem Kapitel 23 mittendrin die Treue zum Bundesgott an der Einhaltung von drei Hauptfesten festgemacht. 1. Das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote – oder das Passahfest. Wir feiern deshalb unser Osterfest, weil Christus unser Osterlamm als Erfüllung ist.

2. Das erste Erntefest, das Pfingstfest, was uns nächsten Sonntag bevorsteht – da zum ersten Pfingsten die erste Ernte der Heiden, aus den Völkern der Nichtjuden ins Reich Gottes eingebracht wurde, als der Heilige Geist 3000 auf einmal einbrachte. Auch dieses Fest sollen wir als Christen besonders feiern. Der Heilige Geist für die Mission ist unabdingbar, damit auch der Rest der Erwählten aus aller Welt noch eingebracht wird. Das ist unsere und Deine Verantwortung im Bund Gottes.
3. Dann finden wir dann noch das Erntedankfest am Ende der Ernte. Auch das sollten die Vertragspartner einhalten. Dieses Fest feiern auch die meisten Christen auch heute, und wir schauen nach vorn, um am Ende der Welt das Fest der Wiederkunft Christi zu feiern, wenn die Gesamternte eingesammelt worden ist.

Doch hier folgt unsere Verantwortung. Zu allen Festen sollen zuerst die Männer kommen. Du Mann, am Muttertagsonntag,  pilgerst du zu den regelmäßigen Hochfesten und Gottesdienstfeiern, planst du erstens dabei zu sein? Zweitens steht immer wieder, dass die Männer zu allen diesen Festen nicht mit leeren Händen zum Gottesdienst kommen sollen: V 15 und V 19. Denn sie sollten von den Erstlingsfrüchten des Ackers, des Viehs mitbringen. D.h. für uns, von unseren finanziellen Einkünften unseren erstbesten Teil mit ins zu Gotteshaus bringen. Gott will nicht erst vom Schwanz etwas haben, sondern zuerst vom Kopf. Er will vom Besten, vom Ersten und vom am meisten Geschätzten zuerst etwas als Opfer haben.

Wollen wir deshalb als Bundesvolk des Neuen Bundes in Christi Blut auch diesem Vorbild folgen? Sein Blut wurde vergossen, der Abendmahlsgottesdienst sollte unsere wöchentliche Pilgerreise, besonders für uns Männer sein. Wir sollten dahin auch unser Bestes mitbringen, besonders dreimal im Jahr sollten wir in den Gottesdienst unserer Gemeinde ein raschelndes Opfer – Finanzopfer – bringen, nicht mit leeren Händen kommen.

 Wollen wir das tun? Unsere Bundespflicht Christus gegenüber wird sich an regelmäßiger Teilnahme am Gottesdienst und mit Kommen mit vollen Händen für das Reich Gottes und den Einsatz für die Mission zeigen.

Dann werden wir neben dem geistigen Segen des ewigen Lebens auch körperlich und materiell sicherlich gesegnet werden. Wir werden merken, dass der Engel Gottes unsere Wege ebnet und segnet. Amen.    Bf. +G. Meyer

Advent 1, Sermon at Carol Service, Neuss

Gospel of John, 1,1-14

John, the author of this Gospel is greatly beloved, because he presents Jesus most clearly as the promised Lamb of God, who conveys eternal live to all who simply believe in Him.

This evening we will not talk about the beloved author of this Gospel, but about his main subject – the hero of his story, Jesus the beloved Son of God and his purpose for our Advent. Why? Because we need to know before everything about his name, being, existence, work, destiny, his purpose of coming to earth, credentials, authority and miracles proof it. And then, if we are convinced in his name, character, authority and work, then we will ask: What are the benefits for me? And if I am touched by him and convinced he will benefit me, what do I do with this extra ordinary hero? Do I reject him or receive him for my eternal life?

This is the thought line we will follow these moments. This should touch your heart and mind. Why did the Apostle John write this beloved Gospel? Because he wanted to persuade you to believe in this Gospel Hero. And this will be very clear to all of us if we follow him to the end of his Gospel and end of our Carol Service. Do you believe this Jesus?

At the beginning John declares that the Logos – what the Greeks call all-Reason and the Jews All-wisdom,  … was the spoken creative Word of God. He was forever in an intimate relationship (pros theon) with the true Godhead even before the world was created. Even more, he declares that Jesus, the Word, was Co-Creator with the father God, the work master, by whom everything was created and came into existence, not only the physical, touchable world, but also the unseen spiritual world, the angels in heaven working behind political affairs of the world and for the salvation of the souls of God’s people. If Christ is the creator of everything, then he is the origin of all physical life, all peoples on earth, even his elected Israel. And being in possession of all life (being omniscient, omnipresent and almighty) Jesus entered into our cosmos, this earthly world in a mysterious way, taking on a human body to live in a dark, a dangerous, negative and evil world. Or do you believe after 9/11, Paris, I.S. and all the prisons, this world is good? And as Jesus entered into that darkness many were enlightened and discovered the real life, the godly life of eternity, which in Christ Jesus. But who is this Jesus?

 He is not only the Logos, the Word, but also the True Light; The Only Son: The Lamb of God: Rabbi and Teacher, The Messiah; Son of God; King of Israel and prophetic the Son of Man. To support that claim, John presents seven miracles:  Jesus changed water into wine, healed the blind, raised the dead, etc., and in the 8^th final miracle, Jesus personally rose from the dead. What other proof do you still need to believe in him? to be God himself, to forgive your weaknesses and sins forever?  and convey eternal life he promised? And now, because this Man is God himself, calling you to welcome und accept him into your life; how can you stand aside and not to decide to follow this Hero? Will you believe and follow him all your life?

John says, all who welcomed or believed in him, he will give, commit, transfer his eternal life. And this is exactly the whole purpose of him coming into our cosmos, into our world to enlighten you and me to believe and cling to him. Will you believe as John designed his Gospel? +- Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Will you tonight believe or accept and invite him into your life, into your heart? will you lay him in the manger and crib of your life? Invite him now: Come Lord Jesus, I invite you into my life. Take my live and let it be consecrated but to thee. Amen.
